Some of the Best Moon & Earth Photos from NASA's Artemis I Mission - kottke.org

Over the weekend, NASA’s Artemis I mission returned from a 25-day trip to the Moon. The mission was a test-run of the rockets, systems, and spacecraft that will return humans to the surface of the Moon. Visual imaging has been an integral part of even the earliest space missions — strap a camera to a spacecraft, let the people see what space looks like, and they will be inspired. Well, the photographs returned by Artemis I’s Orion spacecraft have certainly been inspirational. Working from NASA’s archive of images (on Flickr too), I’ve selected some of the most interesting and dramatic photos from the mission. The one at the top, showing a crescent Earth rising over the Moon’s surface, might be one of my favorite space photos ever (and that’s really saying something) — you can see a bigger version of it here.

NASA Orion splashes down after amazing trip to the Moon and back - The Weather Network

After 25 days in deep space, the Artemis 1 mission to the Moon has returned home a success!

At roughly 12:40 p.m. EST, on Sunday, December 11, NASA's Orion spacecraft slashed down off the coast of Baja California, marking the successful end to the Artemis 1 mission.

"The splashdown of the Orion spacecraft – which occurred 50 years to the day of the Apollo 17 Moon landing – is the crowning achievement of Artemis I," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a press release on Sunday.

"From the launch of the world's most powerful rocket to the exceptional journey around the Moon and back to Earth, this flight test is a major step forward in the Artemis Generation of lunar exploration," Nelson stated. "It wouldn't be possible without the incredible NASA team. For years, thousands of individuals have poured themselves into this mission, which is inspiring the world to work together to reach untouched cosmic shores. Today is a huge win for NASA, the United States, our international partners, and all of humanity."

Despite numerous launch delays due to weather and technical problems with the Space Launch System rocket, once the Artemis 1 mission actually got off the ground, it appeared to go flawlessly.

Unlike previous missions which have only featured periodic updates, NASA took the entire world along on this 25-day trip around the Moon and back, via a continuous live-feed streamed by the Orion spacecraft.

Along the way, we were treated to:

  • a dazzling look at our homeworld as Orion departed for deep space,
  • increasingly detailed looks at the cratered lunar surface as the first close flyby approached,
  • Earthset from the far side of the Moon during the first lunar flyby,
  • views of the Orion command module, featuring Commander Moonikin Campos and Snoopy the zero-g indicator,
  • a look back at the Moon and Earth from the farthest distance reached by a human-rated spacecraft,
  • a close-up of the near-side of the Moon on its second flyby,
  • a crescent Earthrise as it headed back towards home, and
  • our beautiful planet as the spacecraft neared the end of the mission.

According to NASA, Orion passed within 128 km of the Moon's surface during its two flybys. The spacecraft also reached a total distance of 432,210 km away from Earth, over 1,000 times farther than the International Space Station. This sets a new record for distance reached by a human-rated spacecraft, beating the previous record of 400,171 km, set on April 14, 1970, by the Apollo 13 mission.

The purpose of this uncrewed flight was to test the various systems needed to return humanity to the Moon, and to eventually go beyond. With the Orion capsule now returned to land, it will undergo months of testing to determine how well it endured in deep space. The various science experiments on the spacecraft will also be examined, which will reveal the stresses a human crew would have experienced on the flight.

"With Orion safely returned to Earth we can begin to see our next mission on the horizon which will fly crew to the Moon for the first time as a part of the next era of exploration," Jim Free, NASA's associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate, said on Sunday. "This begins our path to a regular cadence of missions and a sustained human presence at the Moon for scientific discovery and to prepare for human missions to Mars."

'Orion back on Earth': NASA's lunar capsule splashes down after its 'historic' Moon test mission - Euronews

NASA’s Orion capsule made a blisteringly fast return from the Moon on Sunday, parachuting into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico to conclude a test flight that should clear the way for astronauts on the next lunar flyby.

The incoming capsule hit the atmosphere at Mach 32, or 32 times the speed of sound, and endured reentry temperatures of 2,760 degrees Celsius before splashing down west of Baja California near Guadalupe Island. 

A US Navy ship quickly moved in to recover the spacecraft and its silent occupants — three test dummies rigged with vibration sensors and radiation monitors.

NASA hailed the descent and splashdown as close to perfect, as congratulations poured in from Washington DC.

"I'm overwhelmed," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said from Mission Control in Houston. "This is an extraordinary day... It's historic because we are now going back into space - deep space - with a new generation".

The space agency needed a successful splashdown to stay on track for the next Orion flight around the Moon, targeted for 2024 with four astronauts who will be revealed early next year. 

That would be followed by a two-person lunar landing as early as 2025 and, ultimately, a sustainable moon base. The long-term plan would be to launch a Mars expedition by the late 2030s.

50 years since Apollo 17

Astronauts last landed on the Moon 50 years ago. After touching down on December 11, 1972, Apollo 17′s Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent three days exploring the valley of Taurus-Littrow, the longest stay of the Apollo era. 

They were the last of the 12 moonwalkers.

Orion was the first capsule to visit the Moon since then, launching on NASA’s new mega Moon rocket from Kennedy Space Center on November 16. It was the first flight of NASA’s new Artemis Moon programme, named after Apollo’s mythological twin sister.

"From Tranquility Base to Taurus-Littrow to the tranquil waters of the Pacific, the latest chapter of NASA’s journey to the moon comes to a close. Orion back on Earth," announced Mission Control commentator Rob Navias.

While no one was on the $4 billion (€XX) test flight, NASA managers were thrilled to pull off the dress rehearsal, especially after so many years of flight delays and busted budgets. Fuel leaks and hurricanes conspired for additional postponements in late summer and fall.

In an Apollo throwback, NASA held a splashdown party at Houston’s Johnson Space Center on Sunday, with employees and their families gathering to watch the broadcast of Orion’s homecoming. Next door, the visitor center threw a bash for the public.

Getting Orion back intact after the 25-day flight was NASA’s top objective. With a return speed of 25,000 mph (40,000 kph) — considerably faster than coming in from low-Earth orbit - the capsule used a new, advanced heat shield never tested before in spaceflight. To reduce the gravity or G loads, it dipped into the atmosphere and briefly skipped out, also helping to pinpoint the splashdown area.

All that unfolded in spectacular fashion, officials noted, allowing for Orion’s safe return.

"I don't think any one of us could have imagined a mission this successful," said mission manager Mike Sarafin.

Further inspections will be conducted once Orion is back at Kennedy at the end of the month. 

If the capsule checks find nothing amiss, NASA will announce the first lunar crew in early 2023, picking from among the 42 active US astronauts stationed at Houston’s Johnson Space Center.

"People are anxious, we know that," Vanessa Wyche, Johnson's director, told reporters. Added Nelson: "The American people, just like (with) the original seven astronauts in the Mercury days, are going to want to know about these astronauts".

The capsule splashed down more than 482 km south of the original target zone. Forecasts calling for choppy seas and high winds off the southern California coast prompted NASA to switch the location.

Orion logged 2.25 million km as it zoomed to the moon and then entered a wide, swooping orbit for nearly a week before heading home.

It came within 130 km of the Moon twice. At its farthest, the capsule was more than 430,000 km from Earth.

Orion beamed back stunning photos of not only the grey, pitted moon, but also the home planet. As a parting shot, the capsule revealed a crescent Earth - Earthrise - that left the mission team speechless.

Nottingham Trent University astronomer Daniel Brown said the flight's many accomplishments illustrate NASA's capability to put astronauts on the next Artemis moonshot.

"This was the nail-biting end of an amazing and important journey for NASA’s Orion spacecraft," Brown said in a statement from England.

Trying to reach the Moon again is high on the agenda, not just for NASA but private entreprise. Just hours earlier Sunday, a spacecraft rocketed toward the moon from Cape Canaveral. The lunar lander belongs to ispace, a Tokyo company intent on developing an economy up there. Two US companies, meanwhile, have lunar landers launching early next year.

Earth was recently hit by an "unusual intense blast of energy" from a nearby galaxy, and scientists think this has the potential to alter our understanding of the universe.

Last year, a 50-second-long blast of energy was spotted by scientists. It was headed towards Earth and is known as a gamma-ray burst (GRB) - the most powerful explosions in the universe.

A rare event of cosmic proportions - literally!

Naturally, scientists began to study what remained of the blast to understand where it came from. They found that the blast appeared to have emanated from a kilonova - a rare event that happens when a neutron star merges with another compact object - a black hole or another neutron star.

The study essentially challenged how we understand the origin point of such long-lasting GRBs. In addition, it could also open avenues of mysteries of the universe - like where its heaviest elements come from.

The galaxy that this GRB came from is also mysterious, for it is very young and still in the process of forming stars which is the exact opposite of the only other known nearby galaxy that has hosted a kilonova event.

"This event looks unlike anything else we have seen before from a long gamma-ray burst," said Jillian Rastinejad, who led the study. who led the study. "Its gamma rays resemble those of bursts produced by the collapse of massive stars."

"Given that all other confirmed neutron star mergers we have observed have been accompanied by bursts lasting less than two seconds, we had every reason to expect this 50-second GRB was created by the collapse of a massive star. This event represents an exciting paradigm shift for gamma-ray burst astronomy," the Independent quoted Rastinejad.

The blast was first spotted by NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory and the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope in December 2021. Scientists have been looking for answers since then. This particular kilonova produced elements that amounted to 1,000 times the Earth's mass, suggesting that gold is produced by kilonovae in the universe.  

The findings from the study titled "A kilonova following a long-duration gamma-ray burst at 350 Mpc" was published in the journal Nature.

Webb Telescope Finds Earliest Galaxies Yet Close To The Big Dipper - Forbes

Astronomers have used the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to find three of the earliest galaxies ever found.

They exist less than 400 million years after the Big Bang—a whopping 13.4 billion years ago—when the universe was only 2% of its current age.

The galaxies were found in the same path of the night sky—close to the Big Dipper—where the iconic Hubble Ultra Deep Field image was taken.

When JWST began operations last summer several extreme candidates for “most distant galaxy ever found” emerged almost immediately. Now scientists on the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES) Initial have conducted lengthy observations to confirm four of them by measuring their distances and physical properties.

“We’ve discovered galaxies at fantastically early times in the distant universe,” said Brant Robertson, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UC Santa Cruz. “With JWST, for the first time we can now find such distant galaxies and then confirm spectroscopically that they really are that far away.”

“We are seeing evidence of star formation about as early as we could expect based on our models of galaxy formation,” he said.

Spectroscopy is when astronomers split the light they collect into different wavelengths, creating a rainbow-like spectrum. JWST is fitted with a Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam), which was used to collect the ancient stretched red light from these prototype galaxies in nine different infrared wavelength ranges.

Old light in the universe is red because the universe is expanding. Red light has the longest wavelength. The so-called “redshift” measured by JWST’s NIRCam for four galaxies was 10.38, 11.58, 13.20 and 12.63, making three of them the most distant galaxies confirmed by spectroscopy to date.

“These are well beyond what we could have imagined finding before JWST,” said Robertson. “At redshift 13, the universe is only about 325 million years old.”

The new findings—already published online—will be presented on Monday, December 12, 2022 at the First Science Results from JWST conference at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) conference in Baltimore.

NASA engineers added more Orion tests to mission (video) - Space.com

Artemis 1 is almost home, and NASA is readying for the next stages already.

The Orion spacecraft of Artemis 1 is expected to splash down in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday (Dec. 11), and the agency is already looking ahead to future missions of the Artemis program.

"Artemis 1 and Orion have been phenomenal," Nujoud Merancy, chief of the exploration mission planning office at NASA's Johnson Space Center, told Space.com in a video interview. Orion was tasked with flying around the moon to collect data for future crewed missions and so the mission has been performing so well, with only minor glitches, that NASA felt comfortable adding more tasks to the manifest.

"The whole point [and] purpose of this mission was to validate that we designed the rocket and the spacecraft right, and it's exceeding expectations to the point we were actually adding objectives with Orion," Merancy added.

The primary objective of the Artemis 1 mission will be completing the high-speed re-entry and splashdown, which is so far on track for Sunday (Dec. 11). The mission also achieved other key objectives, such as testing the unflown Space Launch System and flying in a distant retrograde orbit around the moon to assess readiness for human occupancy of the Orion spacecraft.

More analysis will come after splashdown to see how well Orion did, Merancy said. "All of the data recorded during the mission, the engineers and the teams will be going back through it to make sure that it matched our predictions. That's really the forward plan."

When Artemis 2 flies around the moon with astronauts in about 2024, it will be a test of Orion's life support systems as those were not included in Artemis 1. The crew has not yet been announced, but the mission design is already completed, Merancy said. 

Following that will be the first crewed landing of the moon, which is expected to be in 2025 or so with Artemis 3, which will begin a series of excursions to the south pole of the moon along with NASA's planned Gateway space station in orbit.

"There's just so much to do," Merancy added of the mission planning, but added that the Artemis team will be taking some time to celebrate the success of Artemis 1 during the splashdown.

"There's going be a viewing party here at Johnson, on Sunday, to watch it happen," Merancy said. "I'll be bringing the family, and we'll be here to celebrate like everyone else."
