Blue Jays prospects in May - Bluebird Banter

Since it is the start of June, I thought we’d take a quick look at how the guys on our Blue Jays Top 40 Prospects list did in May

1. Vlad: He hit .253/.317/.484 with 6 home runs, 9 walks and 19 strikeouts in May for the Blue Jays.
2. Bo Bichette: Out with a broken hand. He’s started light ‘baseball activities’. I’m thinking his hand might be sore for a while, which might hurt his swing.
3. Danny Jansen: He hit a little worse in May than April. May he hit .143/.217/.238 with 2 homers. There aren’t any positive signs yet. Thrown out 33% of base stealers.
4. Nate Pearson: May 5 starts in New Hampshire with a 4.08 ERA in 17.2 innings, allowing 18 hits, 1 home run, 5 walk with 22 strikeouts. He had a couple of bad starts. They are still alternating 2 inning and 5 inning starts (though a couple of those 5 innings starts have come up a bit short of 5 innings).
5. Eric Pardinho: On the IL with a sore elbow. He’s thrown in a couple of extended spring training games.
6. Jordan Groshans: Only played in 4 games in May, going 3 for 10 with 2 walks in Lansing. He’s been out with “general soreness in his left foot”. It seems like he’s been out a long time for ‘general soreness’. He hasn’t played since May 13th.
7. Sean Reid-Foley: Sean’s May was been much better than his April. In May he made 5 starts, had a 4.20 ERA. In 30 innings, he’s allowed 16 hits, 4 home runs, 18 walks and 26 strikeouts. Still too many walks. His last start was 4 innings with 4 walks but the one before was 8 innings with just 2 walks. As much as Edwin Jackson has been kinds of awful, I don’t want them bringing Sean up until they are sure it won’t set him back again. But, if he can continue to make small improvements, I’d like to see him up sometime.
8. T.J. Zeuch: Missed spring training with a ‘lat strain’ and still hasn’t pitched this year. He’s started throwing on the side, so maybe we’ll see him pitching soon.
9. Kevin Smith: The Jay and Silent Bob Reboot should be out in the fall. This Kevin Smith. This one is playing in New Hampshire and after having a bad April, had an even worse May, hitting .167/.248/.367 with 4 home runs, 7 walks and 32 strikeouts. He’s a smart guy, I’m thinking he’ll figure it out.
10. Cavan Biggio: Before the callup, he was hitting .246/.388/369 in 19 games, with 1 home run, 14 walks and 12 strikeouts. For the Jays, in 6 games, he is hitting .278/.316/.444 with 1 home run, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. I think he’ll walk more as time goes on.
11. Anthony Alford: He had a much better May after a bad April. In May he hit .276/.355/.429 with 2 home runs, 10 walks and 26 strikeouts and 3 steals. If he hit like this in April, he’d be playing in Toronto. He came out of yesterday’s Bisons game with an injury, apparently a cut on his hand stealing a base. He shouldn’t be out long, I hope.
12. Adam Kloffenstein: Waiting for short season ball to start.
13. Patrick Murphy: May was better than April for Patrick. In 5 starts, he had a 3.52 ERA. In 25.2 innings he allow 31 hits, 2 homers, 6 walks and 36 strikeouts. I’d like them to move him up to Buffalo. Or to Toronto for that matter.
14. Hector Perez: After a terrible April, Hector had a terrific May. 2.51 ERA in 5 starts. In 28.2 innings he allowed 25 hits, 4 homers, 10 walks, and 25 strikeouts. Like Murphy, I’m hoping he’ll get moved up to Buffalo soon. I’m pretty sure he could be better than Edwin Jackson if he was pitching in the majors.
15. Chavez Young: Had a rough April and his May wasn’t much better. He hit .226/.310/.387 in 18 games, with 2 home runs, 6 walks and 14 strikeouts. Also had 3 steals.
16. Thomas Pannone: He’s made the trip between Buffalo and Toronto 4 times. He only pitched once in Buffalo, 2.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned, 1 walk and 3 k. In Toronto he pitched in 7 games, 1 start, 9.58 ERA, 10.1 innings, 15 hits, 2 homes, 7 walks and 12 strikeouts.
17. Rowdy Tellez: His May wasn’t bad, .247/.295/.438 with 4 home runs, 5 walks and 27 strikeouts. It would be nice if he could cut back on the strikeouts.
18. Yennsy Diaz: Pitched in 6 games in New Hampshire, 5 starts. 3.86 ERA. In 32.2 innings he allowed 29 hits, 2 homers, 13 walks and 29 strikeouts. Our starting pitching is much better in New Hampshire than Buffalo.
19. Griffin Conine: He’s played 3 games in Lansing after his suspension has ended. He hit .615/.615/1.462. He’s had 8 hits, 3 doubles, 1 triple and 2 home runs.
20. Miguel Hiraldo: Waiting for short season ball to start.
21. Hagen Danner: He had a lousy April and May was even worse. in 18 games he hit .100/.111/.133 with 4 walks and 24 strikeouts. At some point, if things don’t improve, they will have to decide that moving him to the mound is a good idea.
22. Orelvis Martinez: Waiting for short season ball.
23. Billy McKinney: Was sent down to Buffalo May 24th. In his first 5 games there he hit .118/.250/.118. Before that he hit .228/.279/.421 with 3 home runs in 18 games for the Blue Jays.
24. Ryan Noda: He had a good April, but May wasn’t as good, hit .219/.341/.411 in 24 games. He had 3 home runs, 13 walks and 23 strikeouts in Dunedin.
25. Reese McGuire: He had a terrible April, but May was much better. He hit .258/.342/.409 with 2 homers 8 walks and 8 strikeouts (and 2 steals!) in 20 games. If he can continue to hit, he might push his way to the majors, since Maile and Jansen aren’t hitting much.
26. Elvis Luciano: Pitched in 8 games. Had a 8.76 ERA in 12.1 innings. He allowed 19 hits, 2 homers, 9 walks and 9 strikeouts.
27. Trent Thornton: Made 6 starts for the Jays. Had a 4.02 ERA in 31.1 innings. He allowed 25 hits, 5 homers, 16 walks and 32 strikeouts. We are so lucky he’s been so good and consistent, we need a cloning machine.
28. Logan Warmoth: Playing in Dunedin. He’s back from being on the IL, played in 7 games at the end of the month. Hit .310/.355/.552 with 3 homers, 1 triple, 2 doubles and 2 walks and 12 strikeouts. Maybe he can move back up the list next year.
29. Forrest Wall: Playing in New Hampshire. He had a very good April and his May was even better. He hit .327/.409/.515 with 9 doubles, 2 triples and 2 homers. 12 walks and 19 strikeouts and 5 steals. If we didn’t have 47 outfielders in Buffalo, I’m sure he’d be moved up there.
30. Leonardo Jimenez: Waiting for short season ball, on the GCL roster.
31. Justin Maese: Out for the season after surgery to address a shoulder impingement
32. Brock Lundquist: Playing in New Hampshire. Brock had a terrible April. But May has been great, hitting .309/.398/.420, with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 12 walks and 24 strikeouts. Also 3 steals. He’s been playing the corner outfield spots. He showed power the last two seasons, but not so much this year.
33. Santiago Espinal: Playing in New Hampshire. Hit .260/.319/.317 in May, with 8 walks and 16 strikeouts. On the season he’s had 5 steals, but caught 5
34. Chad Spanberger: He had a bad April and May wasn’t any better, hitting .204/.242/.323 with 2 homers, 5 walks and 19 strikeouts at New Hampshire. They might have to consider moving him down, just to see if he can get the bat going.
35. Zach Jackson: Pitching in relief for Buffalo. If he could find the strikezone he’d have a job in Toronto. Pitched 12.2 innings in May with 10 walks, 12 strikeouts. He had a 4.97 ERA and 10 hits allowed, but it is the walks that matter.
36. Jackson McClelland: Pitching in New Hampshire. I link the two Jacksons together in my mind. This Jackson pitched in 7 games, with a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings. He allowed 8 hits, 1 walks and 9 strikeouts. Last month he had 8 walks in 12 innings. Hoping he continues to find the strikezone. When you throw 100 mph, if you can throw strikes you can pitch in the MLB.
37. Joshua Palacios: Played last Wednesday for the first time since mid-April, finally back from the IL, but hasn’t played since.
38. Otto Lopez: Had a good April, and an even better May for Lansing. Hit .310/.364/.410with 3 doubles, 2 triples and a homer. 9 walks and 12 strikeouts. He stole 5 bases, but was caught 6 times. We’ve been told that they are getting guys to run a lot in the lower minors.
39. Alejandro Kirk: Playing full season ball for the first time, at Lansing. May was very good. June that much better, hitting .393/.77/.571, with 10 doubles, 8 walks and 7 strikeouts. No home runs yet this year, but he’s hitting like a guy who wants to move up a level or two.
40. Riley Adams: Moved up from Dunedin to New Hampshire May 3rd. Since then he’s hit .313/.389/.525, much the same as he hit in April, with 3 home runs, 6 walks and 29 strikeouts. I get the feeling he and Kirk won’t be at the bottom of our list next year.
