Gennadiy Golovkin def. Steve Rolls via KO (Round 4, 2:09)
GGG made a successful debut on DAZN tonight, putting opponent Steve Rolls down and out in the 4th round for a big KO victory.
For Golovkin, this was a big fight for a number of reasons. It was the debut for DAZN. It was his first fight without Abel Sanchez in his corner, instead working with Johnathon Banks. It was presumably there to set up a trilogy fight with Canelo. It was his first fight since taking a loss on his ledger. In short, the 37 year old needed this win, and he needed it to be a big win. And he got it.
Golovkin had a good first round, but Rolls seemed to find himself in the 2nd, landing some clean shots and counters on GGG. Those punches maybe hinted that the former champion was not quite what he once was. And just one week removed from Ruiz vs. Joshua, maybe a 2nd upset was in the air.
But in round 4, Golovkin connected with his famed power, putting Rolls down with a clean left inside. He struggled back to his feet, but wasn’t all the way there by the time the referee hit 10, and that was that. Get the highlight of the finish above or here. And here’s the slo-mo version:
Post-fight, GGG predictably called out Canelo Alvarez, hoping he can get a third shot at earning the win against his nemesis.
Golovkin is now 39-1-1 with 35 KOs. Rolls takes his first loss here and drops to 19-1 and, presumably, back to obscurity.
