The Bruins bow out - The Boston Globe

On the other end of the ice, the Blues’ offense created fewer opportunities. However, they played well enough fundamentally to take full advantage of the Bruins’ defensive breakdowns. The final three of the Blues’ four goals came off of missed defensive assignments, for which Rask shouldn’t be blamed.

While it’s harder to chalk up the winners’ first goal to a defensive blunder, Ryan O’Reilly’s deflection could have snuck past any elite netminder.

Make no mistake. This game was won by Jordan Binnington and lost by the Bruins’ defense.

A show of good sportsmanship

Probably not many kids were still watching, and most fans had left the Garden by the time the Bruins and Blues lined up and shook each other’s hands after the game (as few other professional athletes do). For 60 minutes (and over seven games spanning two weeks), these men had been mortal enemies, pummeling each other, fighting tooth and nail for the puck, battling for every inch and advantage. But then, only minutes after the game ended (and after many of the Bruins players had been in tears), the men lined up and shook the hand of every opposing player, looked each other square in the eye, sharing warm words and often hugs, showing their mutual admiration and respect. It was quite moving.

Our kids can learn from their example. In fact, we all can.

Boston fans’ boos are a low point

As a graduate of Boston University in 1968, I was fortunate to see the Bruins play against St. Louis in the Blues’ first season. As I stood up to cheer for the Blues, it seemed like nearly 14,000 fans were going to pummel me.

St. Louis has waited a long time to win its first Stanley Cup.

Sadly, Boston hockey fans are poor sports, as they continually booed after their team’s Game 7 loss Wednesday.

It was a tough series of seven games, fought hard by all the players. It is a shame the fans do not have the class of the Bruins.
