Some days the future looks so bright.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits a huge home run for us in the 8th inning. Just one of those big moments, where your best player has to come through and he did.
Randal Grichuk had 2 homers. A 2-run shot in the first and a solo homer in the 8th.
Even Brandon Drury hit one out in our 5-run 8th inning.
And, even though I doubted him, Teoscar Hernandez had a super game. In the second inning, Teoscar led off with a hustle double and then he scored on a single to center. He also singled and stole a base. And he caught everything hit his way in center, including making a nice catch on a line drive.
Lourdes Gurriel (leading off, I don’t see him as a leadoff hitter at all), walked twice and scored twice.
Cavan Biggio walked twice and singled.
Offensively, it was one of those rare fun games of the season.
On the pitching side, Trent Thornton was very good through 4 innings. He had some troubles in the 5th. It started with a walk to Clint Frazier (when Trent didn’t get the ball on a pitch that was right on the corner, which would have been strike 3). After a ground out, 3 straight singles, a walk and another single, scored 3. Nothing hit really hard, just missing stuff missing fielders. The 3 run inning tied the game.
Trent was perfect through 3.2 innings, then Gary Sanchez hit a home run.
Derek Law pitch the 6th inning. He gave up a ground ball single, got 2 outs and then another ground ball single. He was kind of unlucky with those, but then Teoscar made a nice catch in CF for him. Then a DJ LeMagieu homer put us down 3.
Sam Gaviglio pitched two super innings. He looked as good as he looked early in the season, hopefully his little slump is over. He got the win.
Ken Giles pitched the 9th, getting 2 strikeouts. It wasn’t a save, but it felt like a save.
Jays of the Day: Vlad! (.783 WPA), Randal (.211) and Teoscar (.239).
Suckage: Law (-.339), Thronton (-.224), Galvis (-.155, but he did make a rather amazing defensive play, Drury, at 3B, crossed in front of him to make a play but he just defected it with his glove right to Galvis, who, even surprised, managed to throw it to first in time) and Smoak (-.138, for an 0 for 5).
The Yankees played some little league defense to give us 3 unearned runs. Gio Urshela made two errors. Thanks Gio.
We need a win tomorrow for a sweep over the Yankees.
Sorry for any mistakes in this, I’m watching Raptors while typing.
