Danny Jansen hits 2 homers, but Jays lose - Bluebird Banter

Red Sox 8 Blue Jays 7

So often it is one bad inning that ruins things.

Today we were up 6-1 going into the sixth inning. Thomas Pannone was doing great. All was good in Jays land.

In the sixth Pannone started off with a walk to Mookie Better and then singles to Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts and J.D. Martinez. Suddenly it was 6-3. Pannone came out and Tim Mayza came in.

A pop out gave us our first out of the inning. A walk and a ground out, scoring a run but getting us to two outs, but made it 6-4 with the tying run on base.

And then a Michael Chavis homer put the Red Sox in front 7-6.

It had been going so good. We scored:

Then, of course, the Red Sox scored a bunch and we were behind.

But we tied things up again in the 8th, doubled from Jansen and Eric Sogard got us even at 7s.

Ken Giles pitched the ninth, in a tie game, and gave up an opposite field wall-crapper homer to pinch-hitter Marco Hernandez. And we were behind again.

Other than Mayza and Giles giving up the homer, our bullpen did the job. Joe Biagini pinched a scoreless inning, giving up just a walk. Nick Kingham pitched a perfect 8th.

Derek Law played opener and gave up a Devers homer and then a 2-out single, and came out of the game.

Pannone went 4.1. Allowed 4 hits, 4 earned (2 of those runs were scored after he left the game), 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. 3 of the hits and all 4 of the earned runs came in that terrible sixth inning. He deserved better. I think he earned another start.

We had a shot at a comeback in the ninth. With 1-out, Biggio and Smoak each walked. But Tellez hit a fly out to medium left. And, a pinch-hitting Vladimir Guerrero ground out to end the game.

We had 11 hits and 5 walks on the day.

Jansen had 3 hits, 2 homers and a double. He’s had 4 homers the last 3 games and 7 hits.

Drury was 2 for 4. Biggio had 3 walks. Smoak had 2 walks and a single.

Lourdes made a tremendous catch on a fly to left field, he’s looking like a real pro in the outfield. Buck and Pat talked about him moving to center field in the future and I though ‘that doesn’t sound that bad an idea’.

Jays of the Day: Jansen (.281 WPA), Sogard (.221), Biggio (.179) and Smoak (.115).

Suckage: Mayza (-.359), Giles (-.297), Gurriel (-.190, 0 for 5), Vlad (-.172, for the ground out to end the game), Hernandez (-.128, 1 for 4) and Tellez (-.102, 1 for 5, much of that for the fly out in the ninth).

One we should have won, but at least the baseball is exciting lately. We had a ton of boring baseball this season, lately it has been exciting, win or lose.
