Report: Kawhi's Clippers contract is for two years plus option - Sportsnet.ca

Kawhi Leonard could be a free agent again as early as 2021 despite initial reports he agreed to a four-year max contract with the Los Angeles Clippers worth roughly $142 million.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Leonard officially signed on the dotted line Wednesday, but it turns out the deal is for three years and $103 million with Leonard having the ability to opt out after the 2020-21 season.

The Clippers reportedly wouldn’t have been able to land Leonard had they not traded for Paul George, but in order to acquire George from the Oklahoma City Thunder the team paid a hefty price.

L.A. gave up seven first-round picks (one protected, four unprotected, two pick swaps) plus forward Danilo Gallinari and Canadian point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to add the four-time All-NBA forward.

George has three years remaining on his current contract – a four-year max deal he inked with the Thunder in 2018 – but he can also opt out in 2021.

This means the Clippers have Leonard and George locked up for only two seasons before both could hit the open market and walk.

Leonard helped lead the Toronto Raptors to their first championship in franchise history in June, winning his second career NBA Finals MVP along the way.

The Riverside, Calif., native had taken meetings with the Clippers, Raptors and Los Angeles Lakers prior to making his final decision to join the Clippers.
