With the trade deadline only nine days away, the Toronto Blue Jays have yet to make a trade involving their big pieces. That doesn’t mean that the interest in those pieces isn’t picking up, and if the rumour mill is any indication, many teams are actively pursuing some of Toronto’s most valuable players.
Eight teams were in Detroit to scout Marcus Stroman during his latest start, when he pitched seven scoreless innings and didn’t walk a batter. The Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Padres, Rays, Reds and Red Sox all had one scout present, while the Yankees had two.
Now, Jon Heyman of MLB Network is suggesting that the Astros and Yankees are at the forefront of those talks.
While rumours involving Stroman have persisted since March, Ken Giles has only recently been the focus of rumours. The Red Sox, per MLB.com’s Jon Morosi, have “active interest” in Giles, along with Kirby Yates of the San Diego Padres.
Daniel Hudson, another Blue Jays’ reliever, is also drawing interest from multiple teams, including the Red Sox. After starting the season with a handful of rough outings, Hudson has an ERA of 0.93 over his last 16 outings.
If we’ve heard little about Giles, we’ve heard next to nothing about Eric Sogard. The Chicago Cubs have been gathering information on the infielder, along with Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder James Dyson.
On the attractiveness of acquiring Sogard, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors writes:
Sogard, 33, seems a near-lock to be traded so long as there’s sufficient interest. His power surge and general offensive production are largely out of the blue — Sogard was released by the Brewers in 2018 and signed a minor league deal in Toronto this winter — but his strong output has likely positioned as a piece the Jays can flip. As a versatile defender capable of handling second base, shortstop, third base and the outfield corners, Sogard could give the Cubs a sort of Ben Zobrist-lite skill set at a time when the organization still isn’t sure when (or if) Zobrist will return. Sogard’s numbers at second are down this season, but he has a long track record of plus defense there. And after inking a minor league pact in the offseason, he’s assuredly an affordable option for the Cubs or any other interested team.
