Mars will be the closest to Earth tonight than it will be for another 15 years - KelownaNow

Look up at the night sky tonight and you’ll get a good view of the red planet as it makes its closest approach.

Mars will be visible for most of October, adding an extra spooky element for the Halloween season, but tonight it will be the closest to Earth as it will get at least for another 15 years.

For Canada, the closest approach will be at 7 am PT. At that precise time, Mars is about 62.07 million km from us.

NASA explains that this coincides with the Mars Opposition, which is when Mars is directly on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun.

This lineup happens about every two years. During this opposition, Mars and Earth are closest to each other in their orbits.

“That means Mars is at its brightest, so go out and take a look,” says NASA. “Mars will become fainter as Mars and Earth travel farther away from each other in their orbits around the Sun.”

If you aren’t able to see the close approach tonight, the next one will be Dec. 8, 2020, although you’ll have to wait until September 2035 to see it this close.
