Get your cameras out, a meteor shower will be at its peak starting tonight - KelownaNow

Look up at the night sky tonight and you might be lucky enough to spot a few fireballs.

The South and North Taurid Meteor Shower is supposed to be at its most active starting tonight. It will remain at its peak until November 12.

The Southern Taurids are active from Sept. 10 to Nov. 20, and the Northern Taurids are active from Oct. 20 to Dec. 10.

The Southern Taurids peaked in October, but the Northern Taurids will be peaking for the next week.

According to the Farmers Almanac, if there were no moonlight, an observer after midnight would count up to 10 per hour.

“The Taurids tend to have a higher percentage of fireballs than other showers do, and emanate from two spots in the sky,” the Farmers Almanac added.

“One is located near the Pleiades star cluster and the other near the star Lambda (λ) Tauri.”

The Moon is expected to significantly reduce the number of visible meteors tonight because it will be waning gibbous, which is the intermediate phase after a full Moon.

By the 12th, it will have slimmed to a crescent phase so visibility should be improved.

Observers can also take advantage of the unusually long duration of the shower and avoid the Moon entirely.

“The Earth takes at least two months to traverse the Taurid stream, believed to have become diffuse through great age,” explains the Farmers Almanac.
