Taurid meteor shower to brighten November skies - Yahoo News

As figurative fireworks reign below, actual fireballs are potentially exploding in the sky this month.

The Taurid meteor shower graces both Northern and Southern Hemisphere skies at different points, with some overlap in duration and geography. The remnants of Encke’s Comet, they start at the end of October and go through much of November, with the best chance of fireballs during the peak next Tuesday and Wednesday, when the Northern Taurids hit.

“In the case of the Taurids, they are attributed to debris left behind by Encke’s Comet, or perhaps by a much larger comet that upon disintegrating, left Encke and a lot of other rubble in its wake,” Space.com explains. “While most meteor showers are noticeably active for about a week, the Taurids have perhaps the longest duration of overall visibility.”

Those will be the North Taurids, best visible in this hemisphere, but the Southern Taurids are also visible this week, though they are largely drowned out by moonlight.

If you do catch a Taurid fireball, it could be spectacular, notes EarthSky.com. After midnight on Nov. 12, which is next Thursday, could be the best viewing – or at least will have the least amount of moonlight.

Just look up, the experts advise. You just might find a brilliant shooting star to wish upon.
