As much as public health experts recommend exercising outdoors for the next few months, there’s no forgetting that we’re in the middle of a Canadian winter. What are your options when the weather takes a turn for the worst? Instead of grabbing the remote and settling in for the day, take advantage of all the exercise possibilities your home has to offer.

Admittedly, working out from home lacks the variety you find at the gym and the fresh air of the great outdoors. But on a cold January day, working up a sweat in your living room is not only doable, it can be as tough a workout as any you’ve done in the gym. So get your favourite playlist going and try these home workouts designed to keep you active indoors.

The Stairmaster

Look no further than your stairs for a total body workout.

Warm-up

  • Stand facing the stairs and step up and step down, one foot at a time, on the bottom step. Repeat x 10 leading with your right foot, followed by 10 more reps leading with your left foot.
  • Stand sideways, with your left shoulder facing the stairs. Place your left foot on the bottom step and lower your hips, pushing your butt out behind you, bending your knees until they are at a 90-degree angle. Stand up tall. Repeat x 10. Change direction, with your right foot on the bottom step, and repeat the squatting motion x 10.
