Mars Landing Leaves Humble Bosnian Town Feeling Starstruck - Balkan Insight

It was not a joke

The municipality of Jezero has announced that the landing is expected at 8:15pm and that the live broadcast will be held in modest conditions in the sports hall of the elementary Vuk Karadzic school in Jezero.

When the news was published that the rover, on its first mission seeking life on another planet, would descend into a crater on Mars called Jezero, many people in this small town thought that it was a joke or fake news.

“When I got the link, I thought it was fake news on the Internet. There were divided opinions among the residents of Jezero and of Bosnia. Many laughed. Shortly after numerous confirmations, events and meetings, we received an official letter from NASA which confirms the connection between this small municipality and the crater on Mars,” Mayor Ruzicic told the media a day before the landing.

She said it would for sure help to promote the municipality.

“Sending a letter from NASA and the engineers engaged in this mission put a little focus on this municipality and was bigger news than the name of the crater itself,” Ruzicic said.

The locals in Jezero seem happy that this has happened to their municipality, although they admit that they will probably not benefit much from it.

“Life is hard here, the young people are leaving, but maybe this will change something, at least in tourism; maybe now more people will come to visit our municipality,” Milutin, a 56-year-old restaurant owner, told BIRN in September 2020 in Jezero.
