A full Sturgeon Moon will peak over Victoria this weekend - Victoria Buzz

(Murray Sharratt/Facebook)

Get ready for another amazing full moon!

This weekend, a full Sturgeon Moon will rise over Victoria.

The full moon, which appears every August, was named this as it occurs during the part of the summer where giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most abundant.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the moon will rise on the evening of August 21st, and reach peak illumination the following morning at 5:02 a.m.

To best see the moon, look up toward the southeastern sky after sunset.

Alternative names for the full moon include the Flying Up Moon, Corn Moon, Rice Moon and Harvest Moon.

The Flying Up Moon is a Cree term describing the time when young birds are finally ready to learn to fly. Corn Moon, Rice Moon and Harvest Moon indicate the best time to gather maturing crops.

This weekend’s weather forecast predicts cloudy periods during the evenings. Although this may impact the viewing of the full moon, we can cross our fingers it will clear up in time!
