Jeremy Hansen, 47, was born in London and raised on a farm near Ailsa Craig, attending McGillivray Central in North Middlesex before the family moved to Ingersoll, where he attended high school.
Hansen will be the first Canadian to orbit the moon. He’ll be joined on the Artemis 2 mission by three American astronauts: Christina H. Koch, Victor Glover and Reid Wiseman. Hansen will serve as a mission specialist on the mission, which will see the crew orbit the Earth and the moon, travelling hundreds of thousands of kilometres into deep space.
NASA and the Canadian Space Agency made the joint announcement Monday, April 3 at Ellington Field near NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas.
Hansen tweeted on April 5, “I have received so many messages since my assignment to the Artemis 2 mission. I’m grateful for all the support! This is a fantastic opportunity for Canada, and I can’t wait!”

“We are going back to the moon, and Canada is at the centre of this exciting journey,” Francois-Philippe Champagne, the minister responsible for the Canadian agency, said in a press release. “Thanks to our longstanding collaboration with NASA, a Canadian astronaut will fly on this historic mission. On behalf of all Canadians, I want to congratulate Jeremy for being at the forefront of one of the most ambitious human endeavours ever undertaken.
“Canada’s participation in the Artemis program is not only a defining chapter of our history in space, but also a testament to the friendship and close partnership between our two nations.”
Hansen last appeared in the Times-Advance in June 2018 after he received the North Middlesex Sesquicentennial Inspiration Award at the North Middlesex Community Centre in Parkhill for his “extraordinary contributions and/or achievements bringing honour and/or enrichments to the municipality.”
“You’ve done an incredible job of humbling me today,” Hansen said at the 2018 event. He credited his parents, Nancy and Gary, family, friends and teachers for helping him reach his achievements.
A colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces and a former fighter pilot, this will be Hansen’s first flight to space. It is also the first journey to the moon by astronauts in more than 50 years.
