Growing Your Garden: African Violet houseplant of the year for 2024 - St. Catharines Standard

My grandmother, Eva Willard, lived in the upper apartment of a century-old stone house. The apartment had very deep window sills that accommodated her ample collection of African violets. The violets thrived in her east and south facing windows, sheltered by a veil of sheer curtains. During the summer, when the sun was more intense, she would line the window with sheets of paper to protect her precious crop. Today, my kitchen wouldn’t be complete without an African violet in the window to remind me of Grandma Willard.

National Garden Bureau (www.ngb.org) has named the African violet the houseplant of the year for 2024. The following information will help both novice and experienced growers better appreciate this popular, easy to grow houseplant.
