NASA has had a very busy year, accomplishing many incredible things that are making history and getting people excited about space exploration.
They just shared a video talking about what they’ve done in 2023. First off, they brought back a sample from an asteroid. Moreover, they’re working on a new rocket engine that uses nuclear power. It’s not for today, but it’s part of the plan to send people to Mars someday.
The video also mentions the Artemis program, which is all about sending humans back to the moon.
“NASA does big things,” said, NASA’s head Bill Nelson. “Things that inspire us. Things that unite us. Things that show nothing is beyond our reach.”
NASA’s roundup of the year 2023
In 2023, the International Space Station marked 25 years in orbit, and NASA astronaut Frank Rubio achieved a new record for the longest U.S. spaceflight. Rubio spent 371 consecutive days on the space station.
Meanwhile, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope celebrated its first year of scientific exploration. They even shared an amazing picture showing the birth of stars in the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, right near our Earth, as reported by space.com.
Jane Rigby, a scientist from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, mentioned in the video, “We really are just getting started in terms of the scientific return from this telescope.”
On September 24, the OSIRIS-REx mission successfully wrapped up its seven-year adventure to the asteroid Bennu by bringing back a sample of material from its surface.
Now, the mission has a new name: OSIRIS-APEX. It’s not done exploring, though. It’s setting its sights on another space rock named Apophis, but this time, it’s not picking up any “souvenirs”.
Moreover, OSIRIS-REx made history as the first U.S. mission to grab a sample from an asteroid. This sample is like a time capsule, giving us fresh insights into how our solar system came to be more than 4.5 billion years ago.
NASA plans to develop a nuclear thermal rocket engine by 2027
NASA has embarked on a new mission called Psyche, which was launched on October 13. The goal is to explore an asteroid named 16 Psyche, found between Mars and Jupiter.
What makes this asteroid special is that it’s loaded with metals. Scientists think it might be a piece of a planet-building block called a planetesimal.
Bill Nelson, the head of NASA, shared in the video, “We want to protect our planet by better understanding it.”
Moreover, NASA is also teaming up with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to create a nuclear thermal rocket engine by 2027.
