On NHL waivers today: Kalle Kossila (TOR).

The Maple Leafs cap situation just got a little easier, and with this news we can also assume Kalle Kossila, injured in training camp, is healthy now.
Kossila was on SOIR and $97,850 of his cap hit was counting against the upper limit. This is an amount prorated on his number of days in the NHL last year.
Now that he’s presumably healthy, the Leafs can loan him to the Marlies, but he needs to clear waivers first. When he does clear (or if he’s claimed which is unlikely) the LTIR pool available will be $186,183 with 23 healthy players. This makes it easier to bring back Travis Dermott, likely the first of the two injured Leafs to return, without having to remove an expensive player like Rasmus Sandin.
Kossila is a centre with an excellent track record in the AHL. He had 54 points in 55 games in San Diego two years ago, but fell off last year after starting injured in training camp with the Ducks. He will join a stacked Marlies team that has a lot of competing interests to manage in doling out ice time, but he should get some serious playing time when he’s ready.
