Very rare is it that teams have an opportunity to beat the Patriots at home, or even take them to overtime.
The Cowboys had a chance at the latter, at least, but blew it with a bad coaching decision.
Trailing 13-6 and facing a fourth and seven on the New England 11-yard line with 6:04 to go, Dallas settled for a 29-yard field goal. That brought the Cowboys to within four points, at 13-9.
And that’s the way it ended.
Troy Aikman, the excellent FOX analyst, said what many of us were thinking — his former team should have gambled on fourth down. Perhaps the Cowboys tricked themselves into believing they could march down field on the Patriots like they had during the lead-up to the three-pointer. But that drive included a 47-yarder to Randall Cobb, and New England’s No. 1 rated defence just doesn’t give up those very often.
The Cowboys did get the ball back with 2:38 left. On their own 11. They had a first down wiped out by a tripping penalty (it was the second such call on them this day, and only the fourth tripping penalty called this year in the league) and another when it was ruled a fourth-down pass to Amari Cooper had hit the ground.
It was the 19th consecutive home win for the Patriots — who haven’t lost at Gillette Stadium since a 33-30 setback at the hands of the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 1, 2017 — and marked the 17th consecutive season New England has reached the 10-win mark.
The 6-5 Cowboys are still holding on to first place in the weak NFC East.
Prior to the game, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that if Jason Garrett is not brought back next year as coach of the Cowboys, his first choice would be to accept an offer that would see him become the sideline boss of one of their biggest rivals — the Giants.
Jerry Jones would probably buy him the plane ticket to New York right about now.
ON SECOND THOUGHT
What’s more surprising — that Tom Brady has beaten the Cowboys all five times he has played them or that Sunday marked only the fourth time Cooper had been held to without a catch in his 72 game career? … Looking to pull into a first place tie atop the West Division with the K.C. Chiefs, the Raiders were dismantled 34-3 by Sam Darnold and the New York Jets. Darnold completed 20-of-29 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns and has now thrown seven TD balls and one interception as the Jets (4-7) have extended their winning game to three games … Jets say they were fuelled by the boos they heard in the pre-game warmup on their home field from a huge conglomerate of Raiders fans. “We felt disrespected,” said Jets safety Jamal Adams … On his first reception of the day, six-year Bucs veteran Mike Evans surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the sixth time in Tampa’s 35-22 beating of the Falcons. Randy Moss is the only other wide receiver in NFL history to open his career with six straight 1,000 yard seasons … Bucs receiver Chris Godwin also reached the 1,000-yard plateau with a huge afternoon, catching seven passes for 184 yards and two majors.
SIDELINE TO SIDELINE
Mason Rudolph wasn’t given the chance to throw four interceptions for the second week in a row. He was yanked after tossing one, and completing just eight of 16 passes for 85 yards, as Devlin (Duck) Hodges came on to lead the Steelers to a 16-10 win over the hapless Bengals. The Duck man reminded absolutely no one of Terry Bradshaw, completing 5-of-11 for 118 yards, but he did combine with James Washington for a 79-yard TD and, more importantly, threw zero picks. While Cincinnati remains winless (0-11), the Steelers still have playoff aspirations at 6-5 despite being down to their third string QB and minus their top running back and best receiver … Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was non-committal when asked to name his starting QB for next week’s home game against Cleveland. And oh what a tilt that should be … Rudolph was given the opportunity to respond to claims by Miles Garrett that he threw a racial slur at the Browns lineman before Garrett hit him in the head with his helmet. “It’s totally untrue … I couldn’t believe he would go that route after the fact,” Rudolph told reporters, who then asked him if anything he said could be interpreted as a racial slur. “Absolutely not. There was nothing. Not even close.” Somebody’s a big fat liar … No running back is going better than Tennessee’s Derrick Henry these days. In his last two games he has rushed for 347 yards and four touchdowns, including 159 and two within a 16-second span in Sunday’s 42-20 victory over a Jacksonville team that used to have a good defence … Baker Mayfield lit it up as the Browns won their third in a row, crushing the Dolphins 41-24. At 5-6, it feels like they have a better shot at sneaking into the playoffs than the 5-6 Bears, who held on to defeat the Giants 19-14.
BLACK-AND-BLUE ZONE
Dwight Haskins had his arm in a sling after the dreadful Redskins won their second game, 19-16 over the almost-as-bad Lions. Haskins said he played with an injured wrist and was “pretty banged up” but when asked how serious the injury is, he replied: “I’m good.” That’s debatable. He completed 13-of-29 passes for 156 yards while also throwing one pick and no scores. It was the first victory and second best outing of his five-game career. The Redskins won because they ran a kickoff back for a touchdown and because Lions QB Jeff Driskel was even worse than Haskins, throwing three picks … Despite the absence of injured rush end Jadeveon Clowney, the Seahawks forced five turnovers in a 17-9 win over the injury-riddled Eagles. X-rays on Carson Wentz’ throwing hand in the second quarter proved negative, while the Philadelphia quarterback said the injury was not responsible for his sub-par outing that included two interceptions and two fumbles … Jay Glazer of FOX Sports says the NFL is still “weeks away” from making a decision on whether Antonio Brown, who has been hit with a sexual assault lawsuit, will face a league discipline. Just in case you thought/hoped that story had gone away.
