Quick Reaction: Magic 97, Raptors 113 - Raptors Republic

P. Siakam35 MIN, 18 PTS, 11 REB, 4 AST, 1 STL, 7-18 FG, 1-4 3FG, 3-4 FT, 1 BLK, 3 TO, 6 +/-

Almost immediately, you could recognize the coverages Magic head coach, Steve Clifford was throwing at Siakam. Even with a premier defender in Jonathan Isaac, Siakam was seeing immediate double-teams on drives, which forced him to contribute in different ways.

O. Anunoby23 MIN, 9 PTS, 4 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 3-6 FG, 1-3 3FG, 2-2 FT, 1 BLK, 1 TO, 1 +/-

If you watched the pre-game interview with TSN’s Kate Beirness, you start to wonder where OG Anunoby ranks as one of the most likeable Toronto Raptors of all time. OG sported goggles during shootaround, and removed them less than a quarter into the game. Considering the unusual circumstances, he played well.

M. Gasol29 MIN, 5 PTS, 6 REB, 5 AST, 1 STL, 2-4 FG, 1-2 3FG, 0-0 FT, 2 BLK, 0 TO, -2 +/-

Nikola Vucevic was shooting 1-for-7 in 11 minutes played, all versus Gasol. He struggled mightily before his unfortunate injury in the 2nd quarter. Marc Gasol remains a premier NBA rim-defender. We should know by now, what Gasol lacks in scoring, he more than makes up for with his elite playmaking and ability to diagnose the floor.

F. VanVleet35 MIN, 24 PTS, 1 REB, 7 AST, 2 STL, 10-19 FG, 1-5 3FG, 3-4 FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, 8 +/-

Fred shot the ball extremely well tonight and was victim of numerous missed calls by officials (some more mind-blowing than others). When Lowry and Ibaka first went out, I struggled to see who would consistently pick up the slack. Other than the obvious Siakam, FVV has done more than enough.

N. Powell38 MIN, 15 PTS, 1 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 7-12 FG, 1-4 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, 5 +/-

Nurse wanted consistency from Powell, and Norm has taken heed. From the start, you could see Norm being very selective with his shot selection, hitting five of his first six shots of the game.

T. Davis27 MIN, 19 PTS, 8 REB, 5 AST, 0 STL, 7-10 FG, 3-5 3FG, 2-2 FT, 1 BLK, 1 TO, 22 +/-

Literally just read Chris Boucher and replace ‘Terence Davis’ where applicable. This is insane.

R. Hollis-Jefferson27 MIN, 6 PTS, 5 REB, 2 AST, 1 STL, 3-6 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-3 FT, 0 BLK, 2 TO, 21 +/-

All-around effort from RHJ tonight. He’s become one of the more impressive early stories of Toronto’s season. Also… HE DUNKED ASDASDSDAFDSFDSGSADF

C. Boucher20 MIN, 14 PTS, 11 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 5-10 FG, 0-2 3FG, 4-4 FT, 1 BLK, 0 TO, 22 +/-

Goodness gracious. I don’t know how Toronto continues to unearth these undrafted gems, but here we are. Chris Boucher was incredible. I chuckled at a mid-game tweet from William Lou — “The Raptors have gotten more out of undrafted, G-League player Chris Boucher than Orlando has with 5th-overall pick, Mo Bamba”.

M. Thomas2 MIN, 0 PTS, 0 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 0-1 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, 0 +/-

Not enough minutes to warrant a grade from Hawkeye himself.

D. Hernandez1 MIN, 0 PTS, 0 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 0-0 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -1 +/-

Similar to the other guys, not enough time on the court to fairly grade Dewan.

M. Miller1 MIN, 0 PTS, 0 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 0-0 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -1 +/-

Wish the guys came in a bit earlier, but it is what it is.

O. Brissett1 MIN, 3 PTS, 0 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 1-1 FG, 1-1 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -1 +/-

In his second-ever game, Toronto-native Oshae Brissett got on the board almost immediately with a 3PT corner-bomb. Always good to see young, Canadian talent contribute.

Nick Nurse

Nick Nurse still isn’t getting the league-wide respect he deserves for his overall coaching job this season. That’s fine though. For now. Nurse is an elite ATO play-caller and in-game adjustor. He proved that time and time again tonight.

Things We Saw

  1. It’s fitting that today was the annual Raptors 905 ‘doubleheader’ with the G-League franchise playing a matinĂ©e game at Scotiabank Arena and doubling up with a Raptors game just a mere several hours later. Why, might you ask? Undrafted rookies Terence Davis and Chris Boucher (a former G-League MVP and champion) absolutely exploded tonight, propelling Toronto to an impressive win. We’ve come full circle, folks.
  2. It’s a known fact Orlando’s identity is built around their defensive ability. Steve Clifford remains a respected coaching mind around league circles and unlike many other — what I would call ‘middling’ franchises — Orlando has a clear identity. They’re a team stacked with plus-defenders who also happen to be equipped with pterodactyl-like wingspans. The only thing is, Toronto doesn’t seem to care much.
  3. Minutes into the 4th, Jack Armstrong put it perfectly:

“… [Fred] VanVleet, in the absence of Kyle Lowry is showing the NBA world… There is no question in my opinion — this guy can run a team full-time. He is a winning player — and I’m sure Kyle Lowry, a basketball savant… is loving it”

  4. People may not agree, and despite Toronto’s recent dominance of the matchup — I always enjoy the Raptors-Magic tussle. Two good coaching minds, a tremendous mix of offense/defense, a varying game tempo, former-Raptor Terrence Ross, Canadian international Khem Birch, budding players in Siakam and Isaac. Is anyone with me on this?
