The second full moon of winter has an appropriate name – the Snow Moon. And the Saturday/Sunday night lunar show will be particularly impressive.
A Super Snow Moon will light up the sky this weekend. The first part of the name – Super – is given when a new or full moon happens at the time of the month when the moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit. At that time, the moon appears bigger and brighter than normal (about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter, according to NASA.)
The moon will appear full for most of the weekend but will reach official fullness on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 2:33 a.m. EST (1:33 a.m. CST).
Future Super Full Moons include:
Super Worm Moon on March 9
Super Pink Moon on April 8
Super Flower Moon on May 7
The second part of the name – Snow – comes from Native American tradition that tied the names of full moons to the season. February’s full moon is also known as the Snow Moon, Storm Moon or Hunger Moon.
Upcoming full moon names are:
March -Worm Moon
April – Pink Moon
May – Flower Moon
June – Strawberry Moon
July – Buck Moon
August – Sturgeon Moon
September/October – Harvest Moon
September – Corn Moon
October – Hunter’s Moon
November – Beaver Moon
December – Cold Moon
