Did humans live on Mars? According to a TikTok conspiracy theory video, human beings did live on Mars once. They, however, rendered it uninhabitable in a nuclear war, a TikTok user has claimed.
The TikTok video, which has gone viral on social media and shared across platforms, states that the war on Mars could have led to a nuclear winter which then resulted in the red colour of the planet, as per a report in The Newsweek.
Who is behind the conspiracy theory?
The conspiracy theory on Mars has been put forward by a TikTok user ‘crackheadjoedirt’. The video apparently came in response to the question ‘what's a conspiracy theory that absolutely blows your mind’.
As of Monday, the video had garnered more than 230,000 likes and was shared nearly 10,000 times.
What is the conspiracy theory?
TikTok user crackheadjoedirt began his theory by explaining the reason behind Mars’ red colour. Citing scientists who believe Mars once had flowing water on its surface billions of years ago, the theorist claimed that Mars once had natural resources.
“Mars isn't naturally red. Want to know what can cause a planet to turn red and change after a couple of a million years?”
"If enough nukes were to go off on a planet the first thing that would happen is a nuclear winter. Nuclear winter is an aftermath of nuclear blasts causing ash that is so thick that it blocks out the sunlight,” the TikTok user said in a video.
"After all the natural resources are drained up from the nuclear winter, the planet turns red from dust. My theory is that we've come from Mars after we drained all of its natural resources and destroyed it with nuclear bombs."
Is this true?
As per Newsweek, the viral theory falls apart since the time scale in question is billions of years and not hundreds or thousands it would take for a nuclear winter to clear up.
The report quoted a study published in the journal Science on March 16 which said the current volume of water on Mars was reached around three billion years ago. And as per the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, humans capable of walking on two legs only emerged around four million years ago.
Then what explains the colour red?
Mars is red because the Martian surface is covered in rust iron oxide -- and not nuclear waste, the report added.
The Martian sky appears to have a pink or light orange colouration because these particles of rust are blown into the atmosphere with the wind.
Nasa scientists think the reason Mars is covered in iron oxide and the Earth is not could be because Mars is smaller and has weaker gravity.
