How many people are in space right now? Check this website on a normal week and you’ll probably find six or seven astronauts and cosmonauts orbiting Earth in the International Space Station (ISS).
However, at the moment it’s an incredible 11 people.
After the arrival of SpaceX’s “Endeavour” Crew Dragon spacecraft on April 23, 2021, the population of the orbiting laboratory has mushroomed.
It’s the first time that two of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsules have been simultaneously anchored to the ISS – “Resilience,” which arrived on 17 November, 2020 with the four-strong SpaceX Crew-1 mission, and now “Endeavour.”
On April 9, 2021 a Soyuz spacecraft arrived at the ISS carrying NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov.
It’s led to some hasty arrangements being made to accommodate this surfeit of astronauts.
Space.com reports that since there are nine astronauts in the U.S.-run part of the ISS two of the astronauts are having to sleep in their Crew Dragon capsules while three are using temporary beds constructed in the gym, the Columbus module and even in the airlock.
The bigger crew on the ISS is partly a result of there being enough room in SpaceX’s Dragon capsules for four astronauts.
The new arrivals—NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, along with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet—have joined the Expedition 65 crew of Shannon Walker, Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, and Mark Vande Hei of NASA, as well as Soichi Noguchi of JAXA and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov.
However, the crowded situation will last for only a few days. On Wednesday, April 28 four of those astronauts will depart the ISS in Resilience after over 160 days in space.
NASA astronauts Hopkins, Glover, and Walker, and Noguchi of JAXA, are scheduled to splashdown at 12:40 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 28.
Walker, currently Commander of the ISS, will pass that command to JAXA astronaut and Crew-2 member Akihiko Hoshide during a change of command and farewell event.
And then there were seven ...
Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
