Setting up home for a few days takes planning. From planning for meals and what you’ll need to stay safe to choosing which comforts of home you’ll bring, there’s lots to consider when heading to the great outdoors. Here are some things — beyond the de rigueur tent, cooler and sleeping bag — to make your camping trips a success.
Create a comfort zone
Being comfortable (especially while sleeping in a tent) is key to a successful camping trip. A tent with good ventilation for muggy nights will add a level of comfort. To keep the dampness of the ground at bay, bring a foam (or blow-up) sleeping pad for under the sleeping bags. Bring a lightweight carpet to use in your picnic area or as an outdoor lounge to keep beach towels clean and prevent tracking dirt into your tent. Look for inflatable poufs and chairs that will add function and comfort to your camping space while being lightweight and easy to pack and carry.

Let there be light
There’s nothing worse than sitting in the dark, so remember to bring a few low-energy LED lanterns to help guide you to the outhouse, play board games or do some reading. Look for small flashlight/lantern combinations to reduce the amount of gear (and batteries) you need to bring on your trip. Don’t forget something to light the propane stove or get a campfire burning. Keep a stash of lighters with an extended wand in the glove compartment. Lighters trump damp matches any day and cut down on time rubbing twigs together when you want to cook or toast marshmallows.
Play it safe
For novice campers, it’s important to anticipate common issues that might come up and plan ahead accordingly. Going hiking? Proper foot support (hiking boots) will ensure a safe adventure and help prevent slipping on wet rocks or twisting an ankle. An old school compass can help you find your way back to your campsite if you are out of reach of a cell signal. Thinking of kayaking, canoeing or swimming in unknown waters? Bring along a proper-fitting life jacket that is made for your body shape and size.

And don’t forget to consider uninvited campsite visitors: safe food storage is essential. Cleaning up food leftovers and scraps is your best protection from late-night visitors while you are sleeping. Keeping food locked in the family van might be the simplest way from enticing the unwanted to a buffet. And though it’s not fun to think about medical emergencies, it’s smart. Consider challenges like muddy pathways, poison ivy, splinters, cuts and sunburns, and be sure to have a general family or travel first aid kit packed to deal with the not-so-great aspects of the great outdoors. Hopefully, it won’t be needed, but it’s great assurance that you will be looked after if something happens.
Erasing your footprint
Setting up home on a campsite can be fun, but it’s important to keep your piece of paradise pristine. Here are three ways to erase your footprint at the end of your camping trip.

1. Take all packaging, food scraps and garbage with you when you leave. Keep an eagle eye out for things like cigarette butts, bottle tops and dental floss — even the smallest of items left behind are unsafe for wildlife.
2. Be sure to check that your campfires are entirely out. The tiniest ember can wreak havoc on a forest and surrounding communities once you are gone.
3. Be kind to the plants. Walk on paths and set your tent in places that won’t kill young trees. And leave the birch bark on the trees — buy your craft supplies, don’t strip the wilderness.
