Interactions between a planet and its host star can produce observable effects on the star: tidal suppression of its dynamo effect, tidal inhibition of spin-down that can enhance activity, creation of hot spots or shrouding by a gaseous outflow from the planet, for example. Robert Parke Loyd and co-workers use the far ultraviolet (FUV) emission from GJ 436, an M dwarf with a close-in Neptune-size planet at 0.03 au, to look for signs of interactions with GJ 436 b.
