Media are invited to come and see how a tyrannosaur fossil is assembled in the not-so flesh.
The UBC Pacific Museum of Earth (PME) is getting a fossil cast of Daspletosaurus Torosus, an older relative of T-Rex. The dinosaur lived in what is now Alberta about 70 million years ago. This 30-foot-long giant weighed up to five tons and was an apex predator until an asteroid struck the Earth, contributing to a rapid shift in climate which ended the age of the dinosaur.
UBC will also receive a smaller raptor, the Dromaeosaurus Albertensis, as part of the Life at the Edge exhibit which opens to the public on July 2. The exhibit will show life at the edge of a mass extinction event and explore the role humans have to play in shaping the Earth’s future as we face another climate crisis.
Junior scientists, or children from UBC Daycare, will tour the assembled dinosaur in all its glory and learn more about the history, and future, of our planet.
The dinosaurs are being built by a professional articulator. Media will receive footage of the process, and have opportunities to film the fully assembled dinosaur and interview experts.
“Our Life at the Edge exhibit is an opportunity to start a conversation about the resilience and vulnerability of life on Earth. By focusing on the extinction of the dinosaurs as a familiar narrative, we draw powerful parallels to our current climate crisis—but unlike the dinosaurs, we have the power to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This exhibit isn’t just about understanding the past, it’s about empowering visitors to take action for a sustainable future,” said Dr. Kirsten Hodge, PME director.
