TORONTO — A late power surge saved the Toronto Maple Leafs from a missed opportunity against the Vegas Golden Knights.
Auston Matthews jump-started the Leafs sagging power play, ending the team’s puzzling 2-for-32 run with the man advantage by tucking a shot under the crossbar with less than 12 minutes to play in Thursday’s game.
That tied it 1-1 after Max Pacioretty had capitalized on a Cody Ceci gaffe earlier in the third period of a tightly played affair.
John Tavares then scored 2:32 into overtime to give Toronto a 2-1 victory and its first three-game winning streak of the season. Tavares finished a 2-on-1 rush with Mitch Marner to secure the extra point.
Toronto had scored just twice on the power play in the nine games before Thursday — a stretch that coincided with the absence of captain John Tavares due to a broken finger — and then came up empty on its first five opportunities against Vegas.
That drew some scattered boos from a restless Scotiabank Arena crowd.
Before the game Mike Babcock expressed confidence that fortunes were about to change, saying "we’ve all got to breathe a little bit," and he was rewarded by a Matthews shot that blazed over Malcolm Subban’s shoulder.
That gave Matthews 13 goals in 17 games to start the season.
