Cloudy weather expected but Geminid meteor shower to peak by early next week

If you’re able to find somewhere with a clear sky over the weekend and early next week, you’ll be in for quite a celestial lightshow.

Astronomy educator and monthly columnist for the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Gary Boyle says Sunday and Monday will be the best days for viewing the Geminid meteor shower because there will be no moon.

“Just like the Perseids we had in August, the numbers are quite high,” he said on the NL Noon Report. “It could be up to 100 or 120 meteors per hour and the great thing about this meteor shower is that they are long, slow, graceful meteors.”

By slow, he means about 36 kilometres per second.

“Different showers have different speeds such as the Perseids were about 72-kilometres per second as they are vapourized in the atmosphere,” Boyle said. “This is about half the value so long streaks, some bright fireballs, the numbers are up there, and no moon at night.”

“The moon will be on the other side of the earth blocking out the sun for Chile and Argentina in the form of a solar eclipse.”

It might be tough to view the meteor showed in Kamloops though as according to the current Environment Canada weather forecast, you can expect cloudy skies on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday night, with some snow possible on Monday heading into Tuesday.
