The Earth was in for a huge and terrifying near-miss yesterday! A 53-foot house-sized asteroid just passed Earth. This asteroid came as close as 424,000 miles to Earth an astonishingly close approach to Earth. This is Asteroid 2024 NM1 and it was travelling at an electrifying 17.95 kilometres per second. In miles per hour, this figure was 40155 mph! While NASA’s Small-Body Database has been tracking this asteroid for years, for some reason the same was not listed as coming on its website yesterday. It has been listed today. Whether it has caught the astronomers by surprise or was a simple case of neglect is not certain.
The asteroid has been classified as a near-Earth object (NEO) and belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. Notably, it will be making a comeback, but not for a few years. Its next closest approach to Earth will be in the year 2027 when it will be speeding along at an even faster speed. The asteroid will be traveling at an astounding 60861 miles per hour!
Notably, researchers do miss incoming asteroids often. They are usually found when they are too close to the earth for anything to be done about it. Getting forewarned is essential as emergency measures can be activated in case the asteroid is heading straight for Earth. Or, if there is a killer asteroid approaching and it will take years to reach, the space agencies can even start missions to deflect or destroy it in space far from Earth. Therefore, warning time is essential.
One of the leading causes for astronomers to miss incoming asteroids is when they approach Earth directly from behind the Sun. The glare of the Sun is so great that no NASA telescope or other space-based or terrestrial instrument can pick these space rocks out. Considering that this was a relatively small asteroid, the chances of missing it became even greater.
