Canadian Championship Final: Toronto FC vs. Montreal second-leg preview and lineup prediction - Waking The Red

GAME THREAD

FT: Montreal win on pens.

Third Shooter: Mullins misses. Not looking good here for the Reds. Camacho buries.

Second Shooter: Altidore.... hits the crossbar. Not his night. Lovitz scores for Montreal.

First Shooter: Pozuelo.... scores. Bojan.... scores as well.

Interesting to see who the Reds penalty takers are. Altidore, Pozuelo, Osorio, Bradley, Morrow?

FT: Toronto FC 1-0 Montreal Impact (1-1 agg.) To penalties we go

90+3 — Likely the last corner of the match... Montreal taking their time...

90+1 — What a tackle by Michael Bradley playing CB to stop the Montreal counter.

90’ — Piatti hits the crossbar. Toronto counts their blessings

90’ — Almost there... TFC defending in numbers as Montreal press with a man up

87’ — TFC just need to see this one out to penalties now. No Extra Time.

84’ — Red Card. Chris Mavinga takes a smart red as Montreal got in behind. Gets a standing ovation from the crowd. First time I’ve seen that. S/O to the real ones who understood. MTL misses the FK from just outside the box.

81’ — Super loud ovation for Tsubasa Endoh who checks out for Patrick Mullins as the Reds are going for the win

80’ — Ten minutes to go... gonna be a nervous ending... why are these games always like this?

76’ — Friendly reminder that this game goes straight to PKs after the 90 minutes are up.

75’ — Pozuelo goes down in the box! No call! Certainly looked like contact from up here.... but replay shows otherwise.

72’ — Patrick Mullins no longer up and ready to come in after that TFC goal

71’ — Endoh makes no mistake after Jonathan Osorio does well to bring the Pozuelo cross down in the box. TFC come within inches a minute later. This is madness.

70’GOAL!! Tsubasa Endoh! TFC 1-0 Montreal! Let’s go.

70’ — Looks like Patrick Mullins getting ready to come in...

67’ — Toronto look more likely to concede right now than they to score. Come on Reds...

64’ — Montreal adamant that Auro used his hand to get back and deflect that ball away. No VAR so they’ll have to settle for a corner. He definitely got away with one there.

62’ — Teasing balls into the box by the Reds. One drifts across the face of goal. THEY NEED AN EQUALIZER!

60’ — A bit of an eyebrow raiser, as I thought Laryea had been great. Auro comes into the game at RB for the Canadian

60’ — Another great cross by Morrow, but Jozy can’t get enough on it at the back post

59’ — Auro Jr. getting set to check in for the Reds

58’ — A lot of space on the field as this game has opened right up. Let’s see if Toronto can capitalize first

56’ — Exciting end-to-end action right now as both teams have chances but can’t get a shot off.

54’ — TFC have spent almost all of the opening 10 minutes in the Montreal half. Need an end product now.

51’ — SO CLOSE! Osorio hits the post after a great run by Laryea

50’ — Bojan, who has quieted off for Montreal, almost takes TFC on 1v4 and wins a corner

48’ — First little bit of magic we’ve seen from Mr. Canadian Championship, Jonathan Osorio.

47’ — Morrow immediately makes an impact, sending a nicely framed ball into Jozy for TFC first chance of the second half.

46’ — One more half remaining. As we expected, Justin Morrow checks in for Ash

HT: Toronto FC 0-0 Montreal Impact — TFC needs one in the second half... what should the Reds change?

45+1 — Good ball to roll in Altidore who barely misses far post. Should he have put that across?

45’ — Morrow warming up alone, so I’d expect he comes on at half for Ashtone Morgan

42’ — As half time approaches, if the score remains the same, Gallardo, DeLeon and potentially Morrow are my three subs. What do you think?

38’ — So much potential, but so little conversion. TFC need to do better at making the most of their opportunities.

35’ — Laryea goes down at the edge of the box. No call. Is the young Canadian starting to gain a reputation? The ensuing for Toronto corner dribbles just wide.

33’ — No goal as yet for either side. Is that a bad thing for TFC? Decent opening 30 so far, but they need one.

27’ — Jozy with a good run in the box but he can’t get a shot away. He’s gotta take one of these

26’ — Bono slightly tested for the first time tonight. A Piatti strike from 25 yards out

25’ — Danny Dichio chant still alive and strong

22’ — What a ball from Tsubasa. Jozy you’ve gotta finish that.

21’ — What is happening. Pinball out here for the Reds as they scramble the ball away in their box.

18’ — The Reds have settled in for sure. Starting to dictate the pace of the game. Ashtone Morgan... doing what Ashtone Morgan does is the only way I can describe the play that just happened.

16’ — Jozy skies it. I don’t think he’s taking the next one

15’ — Beautiful run by Pozuelo. They’re creating a lot of chances down that right side. Dangerous FK coming up for Toronto from about 24 yards out...

13’ — Another chance wasted as Laryea puts the cross long. He’s finding space on the right-hand side though, as he wins another corner.

12’ — Richie Laryea, what a chop. He’s gotta do better at the end, but he creates Toronto first dangerous chance after nice build-up play and a ball from Altidore springs the fullback in behind.

8’ — Bad giveaway by Marky Delgado forces Bradley to pick up an early yellow card for pulling back Bojan

7’ — Inebriatti supporters have been chanting f*** Montreal since kickoff, love this derby

3’ — TFC with a bit of a timid start early on. Let’s see if they can settle in and play more in Montreal’s half. Bojan looking sharp for the Impact

1’ — Toronto hasn’t lost in their last 20 home Voyageurs Cup matches. A lot of traffic getting into BMO tonight, so expect some of those empty seats to fill up. We’re off.

7:32 pm — National anthems are in the book. TFC looking sharp in those new threads

7:28 pm — Fireworks here at BMO as the trophy comes on the field. Here we go...

7:20 pm — How about those Canada kits...

7:15 pm — Friendly reminder that OneSoccer has the stream for this one. Nothing on TV

7:00 pm — About 30 minutes away from kickoff live from BMO Field... another dramatic one ahead?

STARTING LINEUPS

A Strong XI for both sides tonight... but no Shaff... so nobody wins.

PREVIEW

When Toronto FC takes the pitch at BMO Field Wednesday night, they’re expecting to enter an electrifying atmosphere that’ll help in their charge to secure a fourth straight Canadian Championship.

The Reds trail rivals Montreal Impact 1-0 heading into the latest edition of the 401 Derby after an excruciating opening leg at the Stade Saputo last week. When all was said and done, TFC were lucky to escape only down one after the opening 90’ after coach Greg Vanney elected to rest some of their starters in the midst of a congested schedule.

Toronto, with the majority of their first team in-tact, then returned to form by putting in another strong performance in the league against a first-place LAFC side — extending their unbeaten run in MLS to six games, even managing to get some of their regulars rest.

Montreal, meanwhile, are going all-in on the Canadian Championship as it’s unlikely that the Impact will make the 2019 MLS Cup playoffs. In fact, Montreal coach Wilmer Cabrera elected to rest a lot of his crucial players against Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s L.A. Galaxy, which led to a 2-1 loss and helped Toronto FC clinch a playoff berth for the fourth time in five years.

The Impact will be without leading-scorer Saphir Taider, however, after the midfielder accumulated too many cautions with a yellow card in the opening leg.

But all that is behind us now.

The only focus ahead is earning the accolade of being Canada’s best team and qualifying for a spot in the Concacaf Champions League. And if TFC are going to overcome their opening-leg deficit, they’ll need their best possible XI to do so.

PREDICTED STARTING XI

And that’s expected to be the case when the Reds take the field Wednesday evening at BMO, keeping in mind that at least three Canadians need to start the match. Defender Justin Morrow, who didn’t travel to L.A. Saturday night, is healthy and will likely be in the lineup. Erickson Gallardo should be fit enough to make an impact. And Nicolas Benezet, who has missed some time recently with a hip injury, may be healthy enough to make the bench.

It is important that the Reds don’t concede. If they do, a two-goal victory would be the only way that TFC capture this year’s Canadian Championship. With that in mind, here’s our predicted starting XI
