You know, I really just want to talk about one thing in tonight’s game, Cavan Biggio had a bunt double. The rest of the game was mess, but this one moment was great.
Well, there was the Teoscar Hernandez home run, but I don’t know how that got out, Teoscar hit it a mile up, I didn’t think there was any chance it would get out, it cleared the fence without even Buck’s helpful ‘get up ball’ (clearly Buck and Pat know about our bingo card, none of their usual lines have come out in the past week).
Anyway, the bunt:
Apparently it is the 11th bunt double since 2009, which is 9 more than I would have guessed.
I thought this at the time, but Cavan didn’t intend to pop that up:
Cavan Biggio: "Ever since I’ve been in the big leagues playing against the Rays, they’ve played four outfielders against me."
He decided to try the bunt tonight for one pitch. He said the high curveball made him get under it a bit more than he planned. But, alas... #BlueJays

The game? Just bad. We couldn’t hit Tyler Glasnow, and when he ran out his limited pitch count, we didn’t do much better against the four relievers the Rays used. Glasnow went 4.1, allowed no hits, 2 walks, with 4 strikeouts.
We did manage 4 hits in 4.2 innings against the Rays bullpen, a Teoscar double and homer (he also had a walk and a steal), Cavan’s bunt double (also with a walk and a steal) and a single from Vladmir Guerrero.
On the pitching side, T.J. Zeuch wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen him, he allowed 4 hits, 3 earned, 3 walks, 1 homer and 4 strikeouts. He was hit pretty hard, it could have been worst, but there were a few liners right at outfielders.
- Elvis Luciano pitched a very good inning. I’m almost to the point of thinking that the team could use him in the pen next year, but better to let him see if he can become a starter down in the minors.
- Thomas Pannone had a rough time, 2 hits and a walk, while getting just 1 out.
- Ryan Tepera came in with the bases loaded and got a nice double play turned to save Pannone’s ERA. Vlad did a very nice job starting it.
- Buddy Boshers struck out the only batter he faced.
- Derek Law, on the other hand, had troubles. He was unlucky on a 1-out single by Travis d’Arnaud, who just got a bit of bat on it but it fell just inside the right field line. But then, next up, Nate Lowe clubbed a ground rule double, nothing unlucky there. With the infield in, Avisail Garcia ground one under Cavan’s glove. That’s a spot where you really have to knock it down. That cost us a run. Then, after an Law struck out Wily Adams but Reese McGuire whiffed on catching strike three, then throwing to first, the ball and Adams got there about the same time and Tellez couldn’t come up with the catch. Tellez should have set up on the foul side of the bag, the ball couldn’t get to him on the fair side. Just terrible baseball. We got back into the game with Teoscar’s homer in the bottom of the seventh and then gave back the two runs.
- Ryan Dull got the last out of the eight and gave up a solo homer in the ninth.
I guess I could mention that the Ray clinched a Wild Card spot, but I don’t really care about that.
Jays of the Day: Teoscar (.255 WPA) and I’m giving one to Cavan (.057) because that bunt was beautiful. Let’s give Elvis an honorable mention. He should have been allowed to go more than an inning.
Suckage: Law (-.207, hurt by our defense), Zeuch (-.102), Urena (-.113, 0 for 3, 2 k), Grichuk (-.108, 0 for 4, 2 k), McKinney (-.095, 0 for 4, 2 k, 1 good catch in the outfield and one bad throw in from the outfield), Tellez (-.093, 0 for 4, 1 k), McGuire (-.089, 0 for 4, plus the costly passed ball) and Derek Fisher (-.084, 0 for 3, 1 k).
