William Nylander scored his first goal of the 2018-19 season on Jan. 3.
Expect his first goal of 2019-20 to come much earlier, say, by about three months.
Nylander appears to be in a proper frame of mind with the season opener days away, having taken advantage of a full Maple Leafs training camp a year after he was just a ghost in Toronto, working out in Europe as he waited out a contract dispute.
Nylander, who finally signed last Dec. 1 and made his debut five days later, used his laser-beam shot to score in the Leafs’ pre-season finale on Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings, something that could benefit the 23-year-old when the real fun begins.
“It’s always nice making sure you can still score, nice that it went in,” Nylander said. “It helps the confidence going into the game on Wednesday (against the visiting Ottawa Senators).”
Other Leafs have taken note of Nylander’s approach in camp.
“He has a great work ethic and a real determination to him,” John Tavares said. “As he continues to mature and grow his game and develop his game, (his shot) will become more prominent.”
