The Jays have won 5 in a row. And 8 of the last 10.
With tonight’s win, we can’t lose 100 games. A moral victory of sorts.
I thought Jacob Waguespack pitched pretty decent. He gave up the two home run, the Aaron Judge solo shot (and it is hard to complain about giving up a homer to Judge) and then a two-run homer from Tyler Wade (well, that one we can complain about).
His line doesn’t look great, 5 innings, 4 hits (one of the hits should have been an error on Vlad), 3 earned, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts, but he looked good.
We didn’t do all that much on offense. Just 7 hits, but we did manage 4 runs:
- 1 in the fourth: Cavan Biggio doubled, and then, running on the pitch (he would have had an easy steal of third) scored on an infield single by Vladimir Guerrero.
- 1 in the fifth: Danny Jansen crushed a home run to left.
- 2 in the seventh: Teoscar Hernandez (he did a nice job taking a couple of close pitches). That was his 41st walk, tying his total from last year, in 83 less at bats. Justin Smoak followed that with a home run, putting us in front again.
Vlad and Teoscar were the only Jays with two hits.
Anthony Alford had an 0 for 3, with 2 strikeouts. He was robbed an a couple of calls by Cowboy Joe West. Joe had his usual game behind the plate, where the plate seemed to move from inning to inning.
Our bullpen was terrific:
- Jason Adam pitched a clean sixth inning.
- Buddy Boshers got the first out of the seventh.
- And Sam Gaviglio got the last two outs.
- Derek Law had some troubles in the eighth. Cameron Maybin singled (a bit of a bloop), but Law got D.J. LeMahieu to strikeout and Danny Jansen threw out Maybin running on the pitch. But Judge doubled down the left field line (good thing we had that strikeout). Law got to 2-2 on Didi Gregorius and threw a perfect strike, but Joe West didn’t give him the call, next pitch was ball four. Law got Gio Urshela to ground out to end the inning, or I would have had to hunt down Joe West and strangle him.
- Ken Giles pitched the ninth. He had a clean inning, helped by a bad call against Brett Gardner.
Jays of the Day: Smoak (.285 WPA), Law (.145) and Giles (.208). I’m giving Danny an honorable mention for the homer and the caught stealing at a big moment in the game.
Suckage: Waguespack had the number (-.152) but I thought he was pretty good so I’m not giving him the award. Grichuk (-.147, 0 for 4, k) and Gurriel (-.101, 0 for 4).
